Wyoming Wins Its Division
It’s hard to come up with enough superlatives for Marcus Harris. Wyoming Coach Joe Tiller hardly tries any more.
“We have gotten used to him, and so sometimes we take him for granted,†Tiller said after Harris set the NCAA Division I career receiving record to help No. 23 Wyoming to a 25-24 victory over rival Colorado State on Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference game at Fort Collins, Colo.
The victory, coupled with San Diego State’s 44-42 loss to Nevada Las Vegas, gave Wyoming, 10-1 overall and 7-1 the WAC, the Pacific Division title, its first outright title in eight years.
The Cowboys will play the Mountain Division winner Dec. 7 in Las Vegas in the inaugural league championship game. Mountain Division leader Brigham Young (10-1, 6-0) played a late game at Hawaii Saturday night and Utah (8-2, 6-2) had an open date.
Wyoming owes much of its success to Harris, who caught 16 passes for 191 yards Saturday to give him 4,400 yards in his career. He broke the old mark of 4,357 set by Wyoming receiver Ryan Yarborough.
Marques Brigham scored the game-winning touchdown on a two-yard run with 1:48 left in the game to prevent Colorado State (7-5, 6-2) from winning its fourth consecutive WAC title.
Air Force 44, Fresno State 38--Beau Morgan ran for three touchdowns and passed for two, rallying the Falcons from a 28-point deficit to an overtime victory at Fresno.
Air Force (6-4, 5-2) trailed, 31-3, at halftime before rallying behind Morgan, who ran for 217 yards and passed for 64 in becoming the first major-college player to run for 1,000 yards and pass for 1,000 in consecutive seasons.
Morgan scored on a one-yard run in overtime to give Air Force the victory after Fresno State (4-6, 3-4) failed to score on its possession.
Rice 30, Texas Christian 17--Chad Richardson and Jason Blackwell connected on a 69-yard touchdown pass play and Spencer George scored twice as Rice (6-4, 3-4) romped to a WAC victory over the Horned Frogs (4-6, 3-4) at Fort Worth, Texas. The Owls scored 20 second-quarter points.
Tulsa 38, Texas El Paso 21--Troy DeGar passed for three touchdowns at El Paso, Texas, and Tulsa ended a four-game losing streak.
Solomon White added two touchdowns while rushing for 192 yards in 31 carries for Tulsa (4-6, 2-5). The Miners (2-8, 0-7) have lost five in a row.
