Singles Stars Shine, But Rio Mesa Falters

Zuzana Stunova and Veronica Reynosa, the No. 1 and 2 singles players, each won three sets, but the Rio Mesa High girls’ tennis team was swept in doubles and lost, 11-7, to Beverly Hills in a Southern Section Division II second-round playoff match Saturday at Rio Mesa.
Stunova, the defending section individual champion, raised her season set record to 48-0. Reynosa improved to 47-1.
The Spartans finished 13-6.
In another Division II playoff match:
Harvard-Westlake 10, Garden Grove 8--Lindsy Forbess swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, playing at No. 2 singles for the third-seeded Wolverines (15-7) at Garden Grove (10-10).
DIVISION I
Camarillo 11, Thousand Oaks 7--Darian Chappell won her sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, to lead the Scorpions (18-1) over Marmonte League rival Thousand Oaks (13-8).
DIVISION III
Burroughs 10, St. Lucy’s 8--Shaland Romero, Christina Irinco and Kristina Mohos swept their singles matches for the Indians (17-2).
The Regents (12-6) won eight of nine doubles matches.
Westlake 18, Temple City 0--The No. 3 doubles team of Lauren Cardoni and Nicole Mead swept their matches and the Warriors (18-4) won all nine doubles points for the first time this season in a victory over Temple City (13-6).
In singles, Helena Horak won all three of her sets by 6-0 scores.
DIVISION V
Brentwood 13, Buckley 5--The No. 1 doubles team of Jessica Shofler and Donna Dishbak won three sets but the Griffins (9-7) lost at Brentwood.
