Verdugo Hills Looks Too Good

Verdugo Hills High’s 26-14 Northern Conference victory over Wilson on Friday might have done a little too much good for the Dons.

With the victory, Verdugo Hills (6-4, 5-2 in conference) moved into a second-place tie with Wilson (6-4, 5-2). The Dons will be the conference’s second-seeded team because they defeated the Mules.

Verdugo Hills is hoping for a favorable seeding in the 3-A Division of the City Section playoffs, which will be determined today. However, conference coaches planned to place their circuit’s top two teams--first-place Franklin is the other squad--in the 4-A bracket.

With just 27 players on its roster, Verdugo Hills, which has won four consecutive games, fears it will be outmatched against the likes of San Pedro or Taft.

“If we wind up in 4-A, we don’t have a chance,” Verdugo Hills Coach Don Scott said. “We will get blasted.”

Verdugo Hills rallied from a 14-13 deficit, taking the lead when Sean Standley scored on a nine-yard run late in the third quarter.

Wilson drove deep into Verdugo Hills territory on the following possession, but Charlie Coronado stepped in front of Julio Briones’ pass and returned an interception 60 yards to the Wilson 15.
