Hawks Win From the Outside
Steve Smith scored 16 of his 27 points in the third quarter and the Atlanta Hawks made a franchise-best 16 three-point baskets Tuesday night at Seattle in a 117-95 victory over the SuperSonics.
Mookie Blaylock scored 21 points, including five three-pointers, and reserve Willie Burton scored 20 for the Hawks, who won their second game in as many nights in the Pacific Northwest.
Gary Payton led Seattle with 24 points. Shawn Kemp added 23 points and nine rebounds.
Detroit 83, Philadelphia 81--Grant Hill made two free throws with 2.8 seconds left and the Pistons scored 14 of the game’s last 16 points at Philadelphia to defeat the 76ers.
The Pistons trailed, 79-69, with 4:38 remaining before their final run, highlighted by eight points from Hill, who had 22 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists.
Minnesota 98, Phoenix 95--James Robinson’s three-point shot with 1:19 left put the Timberwolves ahead at Phoenix.
Robinson’s big shot, which made it 94-93, was the fifth and last field goal of the fourth quarter for the Timberwolves, who went into the final 12 minutes with a 79-67 lead.
Toronto 100, Dallas 96--Walt Williams scored 34 points and the Raptors overcame an 18-point deficit in the third quarter at home.
Rookie Marcus Camby had five blocked shots and two clutch free throws with 6.7 seconds left.
San Antonio 74, Cleveland 68--The injury-riddled Spurs overcame a 17-point deficit and continued their mastery of the Cavaliers with a victory at Cleveland.
The victory, San Antonio’s first in three games this season, was the seventh in a row for the Spurs against the Cavaliers, dating to 1993.
The Cavaliers shot 37% in a game in which it looked as if neither team would reach 70 points.
Dominique Wilkins, signed Oct. 4 by the Spurs after a stint in Greece, made a jumper and two three-pointers in a little more than three minutes as San Antonio cut Cleveland’s lead to 53-50 with 1:17 left in the third.
Chicago 96, Vancouver 73--Michael Jordan scored 22 points and got plenty of support from Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman at Chicago.
Pippen scored 10 of his 14 points in the second quarter, when the Bulls broke open the game by outscoring the Grizzlies, 32-16. Pippen also had eight assists and seven rebounds.
Rodman added 19 rebounds and 13 points for the defending NBA champions, who are off to a 3-0 start for only the sixth time in team history.
Greg Anthony scored 13 points for the winless Grizzlies, who shot 36%, committed 20 turnovers and looked every bit as hapless as they did during their league-worst 15-67 expansion season.
Portland 111, Golden State 93--Rasheed Wallace made 13 of his first 14 shots and finished with a career-high 32 points to lead the Trail Blazers past the Warriors at San Jose.
Houston 102, Sacramento 80--Hakeem Olajuwon scored 34 points and Charles Barkley had 16 as the Rockets put together another strong defensive effort to beat the Kings at Sacramento.
