Sarkisian, BYU Get 45-21 Win

Steve Sarkisian passed for 313 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as No. 15-ranked Brigham Young coasted to a 45-21 victory over Texas Christian at Fort Worth.

Sarkisian threw touchdown passes of 12 yards to Ben Cahoon and 13 yards to K.O. Kealaluhi, staking the Cougars, 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, to a 31-7 halftime lead that doomed Texas Christian’s homecoming.

The Frogs (2-5, 1-3) had two passes intercepted, surrendered two fumbles and botched a punt attempt that gave BYU an easy touchdown in the third quarter.

No. 21 Utah 45, Tulsa 19--Juan Johnson ran for three touchdowns and caught a pass for another as the Utes won at Salt Lake City.

Utah (7-1, 5-0) played without star running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala, sidelined because of knee surgery earlier in the week. But Johnson alone proved too much for the Golden Hurricane (3-4, 1-3), rushing for a career-best 197 yards in 34 carries.

Air Force 34, Hawaii 7--Beau Morgan ran for 192 yards and two touchdowns to lead the host Falcons over the Rainbows (2-7, 1-5).

Morgan, who left the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter, also passed for 131 yards and a touchdown for Air Force (5-2, 4-1) as he continued his quest to become the first NCAA Division I player to run and pass for more than 1,000 yards twice.

Fresno State 34, Nevada Las Vegas 23--Michael Pittman scored three touchdowns and rushed for 131 yards in 27 carries as the Bulldogs won at UNLV (0-9, 0-5) to break an eight-game road losing streak.

Fresno State (3-4, 3-2) scored its last touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Jim Arellanes to tight end Scott Thompson in the second quarter.

Southern Methodist 52, New Mexico 31--Ramon Flanigan threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two scores, leading the Mustangs over the Lobos (4-4, 1-4) at Dallas.

Flanigan ran for 72 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that gave SMU (3-5, 2-3) a 45-31 lead with 8:57 remaining. Donte Womack added his third touchdown, a 76-yard run, four minutes later.

Rice 48, Texas-El Paso 21--Quarterback Chad Nelson ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns as the Owls (4-3, 3-1) rolled to the victory at El Paso, Tex.

The Owls scored on their first five possessions to build a 35-0 halftime lead over the Miners (2-5, 0-4), who surrendered 415 rushing yards. It was the Owls’ third consecutive game with at least 400 yards rushing.

Rice backup quarterback Chad Richardson replaced Nelson with 5:38 left in the first half.
