Loara Pounds Century
ANAHEIM — Quarterback Archie Lappin and running back John Duhon led Loara to a 40-14 victory over Century in an Empire League game Friday night at Glover Stadium.
Century (1-6, 0-2) scored on its opening drive. Quarterback Javier Marin scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 4:21 to play in the first quarter, as Century took a 6-0 lead after the point-after attempt failed. Marin’s touchdown capped a 12-play, 74-yard drive.
Loara (4-3, 1-1) took the lead for good when Lappin teamed with Mike Diersing on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 1:07 remaining in the first quarter.
The Saxons’ Nathan Robbins recovered a fumble by Centurion running back Hector Moreno at the Century 25-yard line. Lappin, who completed 11 of 13 passes for 248 yards, scored on an eight-yard touchdown run two plays later to help the Saxons take a 13-6 lead.
“We played solid,†Lappin said. “Our guys blocked well and caught well. We know we can play well [in the league]. It showed in the preseason.â€
Led by Duhon, Loara scored 33 consecutive points.
Duhon scored three touchdowns and rushed for 89 yards in 14 carries. His first touchdown came on a four-yard run with 4:17 left in the second quarter to help Loara lead, 21-6. His second touchdown came on a two-yard run with 8:24 left in the third quarter as Loara took a 30-6 lead.
Century scored its second touchdown in the fourth quarter. Ramiro Carasa scored on a nine-yard run with 9:55 to play in the game, capping a 14-play, 76-yard drive. Carasa gained 108 yards in 22 carries.
