Phillippi Sparks, the New York Giants’ best defensive back, sprained his left arch in practice Thursday and he is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions.
Sparks, who has two of the Giants’ five interceptions, was hurt working on a man-to-man coverage play, left the practice field and did not return.
“It wouldn’t be a good time to lose him,” Coach Dan Reeves said after practice.
Backup wide receiver Amani Toomer also aggravated a sprained right knee on Thursday and had to leave practice. He is also questionable for Sunday.
The secondary faces one of its toughest challenges of the season going against the Lions’ offense that features wide receivers Herman Moore, Brett Perriman and Johnnie Morton. They have combined for 116 receptions and 14 touchdown catches. Moore leads the NFL with 55 receptions.
