Honda Weighs Moving Accord Wagon Production to Japan: The move, which Honda Motor Co. said could take place as early as next fall, would mark the first time a Japanese auto maker has transferred production from an overseas base to Japan, bucking the trend for auto makers to shift manufacturing to cheaper locations abroad. The Accord Wagon is made at an assembly plant in Ohio, but the biggest market for the car is in Japan. This means the cars are being exported to Japan. Faced with a hectic rally by the yen early last year, Japanese car makers have been actively shifting production capacity overseas, where they enjoy cheap overhead and lower labor costs. Annual production of the Accord Wagon at the Ohio plant is about 70,000. About 45,000 of those vehicles were exported to Japan in 1995.
