Duck update--They have lost five games in a row and are one of only two teams stuck on one victory. The New York Islanders are the other. The defense has given up an NHL-worst 36 goals. The Ducks have scored only seven goals over the five-game losing streak and have been held to two goals or fewer in six of nine games. Right wing Roman Oksiuta remains in Edmonton after the birth of his second child Tuesday and will rejoin the team in Anaheim. Defenseman Bobby Dollas didn’t practice because of a sore foot but is expected to play. Also, defenseman Adrian Plavsic has cleared waivers and will be reassigned after the trip.

Whaler update--Hartford is off to a surprising start despite a spate of injuries and the upheaval of trading Brendan Shanahan to Detroit. Keith Primeau, acquired in that deal, has two goals in three games. Defenseman Paul Coffey played in two games but is out because of a hip injury. Defenseman Jeff Brown had back surgery Wednesday, but several players are close to returning from the injured list: Nelson Emerson (sprained ankle), Kelly Chase (broken wrist) and goalie Sean Burke (back spasms).
