FAA Reportedly Approves Warning System: AlliedSignal Inc. said the aircraft safety ground-warning system developed by its Torrance-based aerospace division was certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. The Morristown, N.J.-based company said the first certification of the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System was obtained by UAL Corp.’s United Airlines on its Airbus Industrie A-320 aircraft. AlliedSignal said approvals are expected to be obtained for other aircraft shortly. The new system compares a digital database of the world’s terrain with the aircraft’s location and altitude to generate a map-like display of the surrounding terrain. It gives an audible warning about one minute or more before the aircraft approaches threatening terrain.
