Kennedy Player Still Suspended
Byron Williams, a Kennedy High linebacker and tight end, will not play for the Golden Cougars for the second week in a row, Coach Bob Francola said Tuesday.
Williams and cornerback Gary Goss were suspended last week for an unspecified on-campus incident, Francola said. They missed the Golden Cougars’ 35-20 victory over Chatsworth on Friday. Goss has been reinstated for Kennedy’s game Friday against El Camino Real.
Hand-out: Granada Hills quarterback Ricky Mathiesen might miss the remainder of the regular season because of a broken passing hand, Coach Brad Ratcliff said.
Mathiesen sat out the Highlanders’ 25-22 victory over Birmingham last Friday. Chris Cole, a 5-foot-8, 150-pound junior, played in his place.
Waiting game: Two of the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team’s top recruits may use a redshirt season in 1996-97, Coach Michael Abraham said.
Neither Suzie Gyarfas, a 6-foot-7 center who played club basketball in Israel, nor Ice Lincoln, a 6-3 forward from Santa Monica College, would have been eligible until after the first semester, so Abraham is considering having both sit out the entire season.
Gyarfas still has not received a qualifying score on her Scholastic Assessment Test and Lincoln is still working on her Associate in Arts degree.
