Jones Scores Five Times as Aztecs Win, 48-42

No one has been able to stop San Diego State’s offense and the Aztecs figure to get even better now that senior tailback George Jones is back.

Jones, coming off a four-game suspension, ran for a career-tying five touchdowns Saturday night to help San Diego State defeat New Mexico, 48-42, at Albuquerque, N.M.

Jones’ touchdown runs ranged from one to 20 yards in the typical Western Athletic Conference shootout that gave the Aztecs’ their 13th consecutive victory over the Lobos.

Jones, who rushed for 1,842 yards last season, was suspended for the first four games of the season for NCAA rules violations. The suspension resulted from violations related to the use of a car.

He ran for 187 yards against the Lobos, who are 4-3 overall and 1-3 in WAC.

San Diego State (4-1, 2-0) also had two touchdown passes from Billy Blanton to Will Blackwell.

Jones had five touchdowns last season against Fresno State.

No. 18 Brigham Young 55, Tulsa 30--Steve Sarkisian passed for 329 yards and five touchdowns as the Cougars won on the road.

BYU (7-1, 3-0) also got career-high 132 yards rushing from Brian McKenzie and two short touchdown runs from Ronney Jenkins.

Tulsa (3-3, 1-2) used a field goal and touchdown to draw within 34-30 in the third quarter before the Cougars broke the game open.

Sarkisian completed 21 of 32 passes and had one pass intercepted.

No. 23 Wyoming 42, Fresno State 21--With the Cowboys’ line giving him time to throw, quarterback Josh Wallwork passed for four touchdowns as Wyoming extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 11 games at Laramie, Wyo.

Len Sexton scored three touchdowns for Wyoming (8-0, 5-0).

Wyoming and Fresno State (2-4, 2-2) engaged in a first-half shootout that resulted in 49 points.

Wallwork threw for three touchdowns in the first half, two going to Sexton, a running back on a team stacked with talented receivers. Wallwork finished 25 of 39 for 308 yards.

No. 24 Utah 21, Texas Christian 7--Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala, a 275-pound sophomore, rushed for 182 yards, scoring two breakaway touchdowns in the second half, to lead the Utes (6-1, 4-0) to a WAC victory over TCU (2-4, 1-2) at Salt Lake City.

Fuamatu-Ma’afala burst over right tackle and out-ran the TCU defense for a 70-yard touchdown with 4:37 left in the third quarter. And then Fuamatu-Ma’afala ran through the right side of the line and rambled 52 yards for a score with 2:08 remaining in the game.

Colorado State 36, San Jose State 13--Moses Moreno passed for a career-high 359 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score, leading the Rams (4-4, 3-1) to a WAC victory over the Spartans (1-7, 1-4) at Fort Collins, Colo.

Moreno, who completed 19 of 23 passes, hooked up with Jeremy Calhoun for a 60-yard touchdown pass play on the Rams’ first play from scrimmage. Morena had a 23-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Ballard in the fourth quarter.

Rice 35, Southern Methodist 17--Quarterback Chad Nelson ran for a career-best 197 yards and two touchdowns as the Owls (3-3, 2-1) piled up 440 yards on the ground to overpower SMU (2-5, 1-3) in a WAC game at Houston.
