Bassi, Hamdorf Named Coaches of Year

Lisa Bassi, Fullerton’s softball coach, and Ken Hamdorf, Golden West’s water polo coach, were selected as the Orange Empire Conference coaches of the year for the 1995-1996 school year in a vote of the conference’s athletic directors.
Bassi led Fullerton to a 39-12 record, a second-place finish in the state tournament as well as a second-place finish in the conference.
Hamdorf’s team won its seventh consecutive state title as well as the program’s 22nd conference title in the last 25 years. Golden West finished 30-4-1.
Golden West is again the top-ranked team in the state this season and off to a 21-0 start.

Still the same: Saddleback (5-0) remained in the top spot in the Southland football poll for the second consecutive week. Saddleback is at Pasadena Saturday at 6 p.m.
Long Beach (4-1) beat Cerritos, 24-17, to move into second and San Bernardino Valley (4-0) is third. Mt. San Antonio (4-1) is fourth, Hancock (4-0) fifth, Cerritos (4-1) sixth, Grossmont (4-0) seventh, Los Angeles Valley (4-1) eighth, Moorpark (4-1) ninth and Bakersfield (3-1) 10th.

Wrestling showdowns: The top four teams in the South Coast Conference meet Wednesday. Palomar is at Golden West and Cerritos is at Rancho Santiago in 7:30 p.m. matches. All four teams are 2-0 in conference.
