Franklin 28, Verdugo Hills 13--The Dons were unable to stop Franklin quarterback Erik Garcia, who completed 24 of 32 passes for 366 yards and two touchdowns in a Northern Conference opener.
Charlie Coronado rushed for 85 yards in 17 carries for Verdugo Hills (1-3). He capped a six-play, 80-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run with 8:51 left to cut Franklin’s lead to 20-13.
Sean Standley, who rushed for 72 yards in 10 carries, set up the score with a 40-yard run.
The game was delayed for 30 minutes midway through the third quarter when Jason Capuano of Verdugo Hills suffered a bruised tailbone during coverage of a punt. He was taken to Glendale Adventist Hospital as a precautionary measure before being released.
When play resumed, Ethan Slimak completed a 66-yard drive with a one-yard sneak to trim Franklin’s lead to 14-7 with 1:45 left in the quarter.
