Laguna Beach’s Clark Advances
Third-seeded Doris Clark of Laguna Beach defeated fifth-seeded Peggy Winningham of Chattanooga, Tenn., 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of the women’s 65 singles in the U.S. Tennis Assn. Senior Hardcourt Championships Wednesday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Clark will face Liz Harper of La Jolla in the semifinal. Harper, the second-seeded player, advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Carol Cofer of Austin, Texas. The other semifinal will feature top-seeded Elaine Mason of Fresno and sixth-seeded Louise Russ of Deerfield Beach, Fla.
Clark advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Cathie Hall of Newport Beach and Russ defeated fourth-seeded June Gay of Piedmont, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, to gain the semifinal berth.
In the women’s 75 singles, top-seeded Dodo Chaney of La Jolla advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ilse Jobson of Normal, Ill. Chaney will face fourth-seeded Muriel Bard of Laguna Hills, who advanced with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Midge Stafford of Bass Harbor, Maine.
In the other semifinal, third-seeded Lucy Dettmer of Cathedral City will face second-seeded Eleanor Harbula of Sylmar. Dettmer advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jeanne Gengler of Locust Valley, N.Y., and Harbula advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Jean Harris of Carmel.
Second-seeded Bev Winnans of Newport Beach and Harper advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 65 doubles event with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Nancy Hambleton of Annapolis, Md., and Elise Steele of Irvine. Winnans and Harper will face fourth-seeded Cofer and Winningham.
In the women’s 75 doubles event, top-seeded Chaney and Corky Murdock and second-seeded team of Dettmer and Jean Harris of Carmel advanced to the semifinals.
