ValuJet Mechanics to Be Represented by Teamsters: ValuJet Airlines mechanics voted to accept representation by the union, a move that is “good news for airline passengers,” said Teamsters General President Ron Carey. “ValuJet needs steady, experienced mechanics, not subcontracting of safety to the lowest bidder.” The Atlanta-based airline resumed flying Monday, more than three months after it was grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration because of safety concerns in the wake of a crash that killed 110 people. Investigators have focused on mislabeled oxygen-generating canisters in the plane’s cargo hold as a possible cause of the crash. They were placed there by a maintenance subcontractor.
