Seal Beach Daytime Curfew Approved

SEAL BEACH — The City Council approved a controversial daytime curfew ordinance Monday, aimed at cutting down on truancy and crime.
The new ordinance, which takes effect in 30 days, allows police to cite students who are in public places off campus on school days.
About half a dozen residents urged the council to postpone the vote, but council members, who had already approved the ordinance in a preliminary vote last month, pushed the ordinance through on a 4-0 vote. Opponents objected to giving authorities the right to stop and question students.
The ordinance requires the Police Department to report to the council in three months on the impact of the new law.
The city’s curfew would be consistent with the state Education Code, which stipulates that students be in school from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays.
