Lankford Could Be Out of Playoffs
Tony La Russa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, said he would wait until Tuesday before deciding whether to include injured center fielder Ray Lankford on his postseason roster.
Lankford has a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder and could not raise his arm Sunday.

Alan Trammell, 38, announced after Detroit’s 7-5 loss that he is retiring after 20 seasons, all with the Tigers. The six-time All-Star and MVP of the 1984 World Series championship was no longer the team’s regular shortstop. He said the task of role-playing wore him down.

National League umpire Bruce Froemming criticized AL President Gene Budig for imposing only a five-day suspension on Baltimore’s Roberto Alomar, who spit at umpire John Hirschbeck. “The lack of intestinal fortitude to back the people that work for Gene Budig--which is the umpires--in this situation is just horrible,†Froemming said.
