San Diego Midway Baptist 52, St. Margaret’s 28--A balanced attack and dominating size led to St. Margaret’s loss to San Diego Midway Baptist Saturday night in nonleague football at San Clemente High School.
Two years ago, Midway Baptist lead the Tartans, 42-6, at halftime and ended up losing the game, 52-48. Last season, Midway Baptist won, 14-0.
Midway Baptist (2-2), a school with an enrollment of 66, 36 of those boys, put together an impressive passing game and running attack, compiling 616 yards of total offense.
Linier Young, a 6-foot-2, 260-pound running back for Midway Baptist, carried the ball 22 times for 125 yards. Quarterback Justin McKenzie completed 15 of 20 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns.
St. Margaret’s (1-2) got on the board first as Justin Jameson returned the opening kickoff 87 yards to the Patriots’ one-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Dylan Gilbert connected with Kevin Roberts on a one-yard pass for a 7-0 lead.
The Tartans took a 14-8 lead early in the second quarter on a 20-yard pass from Gilbert to Roberts. But after that, it was all Midway Baptist, which scored five consecutive touchdowns, to take a 44-14 lead in the 3rd quarter.
St. Margaret’s added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a 44-yard pass from Gilbert to Roberts and a 17-yard pass from Gilbert to John Masters.
The Tartans rushed only eight times for 21 yards. Gilbert was 18 of 27 for 289 yards.
