New Quarterback Helps Tulsa Stun Iowa, 27-20

TULSA, Okla. — Quarterback John Fitzgerald, making his first start of the season, completed 22 of 37 passes for 361 yards to spark Tulsa to a 27-20 upset of No. 19 Iowa Saturday.
Tulsa (1-2) beat a ranked opponent for the first time since defeating No. 15 Texas A&M; in 1991.
The Tulsa defense held Iowa (2-1) twice inside the 10-yard line in the fourth quarter. The game ended on an incomplete pass by Iowa’s Matt Sherman at midfield.
Tulsa outgained Iowa 468 yards to 366 in total offense.
Iowa Coach Hayden Fry said mistakes like running the wrong pass routes and missing blocks made a difference. But he also said, “I can’t get on our football team. Our guys hustled. . . . It was just a heck of a ball game.”
