More than 600 Los Angeles youngsters gathered Saturday to hear words of inspiration and pledge their commitment to realizing their own potential as part of a nationwide celebration called “Doing the Right Thing.”
The National Urban League organized the rally at Audubon Middle School and similar events in 70 cities across the country to praise young people who focus on school, community and family. The youngsters, ages 4 to 18, were selected for their achievements and citizenship.
College students, former gang members and minority small-business owners shared success stories and words of encouragement with the youngsters. Former Olympian Lisa Leslie gave the keynote address. The youngsters also took a group pledge against drugs and prejudice.
