Puncture in Gas Line Forces Evacuation
Emergency crews blocked streets and evacuated about 25 residents Tuesday afternoon after construction workers punctured a natural gas line under a road.
Condominiums in five complexes near the 2-inch gas line at Saratoga Avenue and Landover Road were evacuated for more than two hours as authorities repaired the break and checked to make sure gas had not accumulated in nearby homes.
“There was a significant amount of gas built up in the sewer areas,” Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Scott Brown said. “The concern was that [the gas] didn’t become an explosive hazard.”
Residents were allowed back into their homes at 6:20 p.m., Brown said. There were no reports of injuries.
