NLRB Complaint Alleges 150 Violations by Caterpillar: Caterpillar Inc. is alleged to have illegally fired or suspended 101 union workers in retaliation months after the United Auto Workers union ended a bitter strike, the National Labor Relations Board said. The NLRB filed a complaint listing about 150 alleged violations of the National Labor Relations Act committed by 160 company supervisors. Caterpillar coerced and intimidated some employees, put others under constant surveillance and ultimately suspended 79 and fired 22, the NLRB said. The company also forced six employees to retire, the complaint says. The UAW brought the allegations against the Peoria, Ill.-based heavy equipment maker to the NLRB, which wants the firings rescinded and the actions taken against workers removed from their work records. Since ending their 17-month strike in December, UAW members have been working under terms imposed by the company when the last contract expired in October 1991.
