Mark Whiten’s grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning against closer Randy Myers lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 9-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night at Seattle.

Whiten, who was hitless in his previous seven at-bats, hit the first pitch he saw from Myers over the right-field wall for his third career slam. It was Myers’ (3-4) seventh blown save of the season as the Orioles lost for only the third time in 61 games when leading after eight.

Brady Anderson hit two homers for the Orioles, giving him 40 for the season.

Detroit 4, Kansas City 1--Bobby Higginson hit a tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning as the Tigers ended a three-game losing streak with a victory at Detroit.

Higginson’s leadoff homer, his 21st, broke a 1-1 tie and helped hand Kevin Appier (11-10) his third loss against Detroit this season.

Former Dodger Joey Eischen (1-0) earned his first American League victory with two innings of shutout relief. Jose Lima got the final out for his second save.

Minnesota 6, Milwaukee 1--Frank Rodriguez became the first Twin pitcher to win 13 games in a season since 1992, and Roberto Kelly homered and drove in two runs at Milwaukee.
