TV Ratings Report
Ratings for the Democratic National Convention stayed the course Wednesday, essentially mirroring levels from the first two nights while lagging about 20% behind their results in 1992. The combined rating on the three major networks and CNN did surpass the corresponding night of the Republican convention by more than 1.6 million households. The third night has been the lowest rated for both events.
Gay Contingent
The largest openly gay contingent in history--142 delegates--attended the Democratic convention, a 40% increase over the figure for the 1992 conclave in New York. Nightly receptions and daily hospitality suites sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, a gay organization, attracted visits from such luminaries as Vice President Al Gore’s wife, Tipper, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).
Bradley Honored
In a library named after Chicago’s first black mayor, African American Democrats this week honored Los Angeles’ first black mayor, Tom Bradley, as one of the party’s “outstanding pioneers.†Still recovering from heart surgery and a stroke, Bradley couldn’t make the party at the Harold Washington Library on Tuesday. But Los Angeles City Councilwoman Rita Walters read a letter in which Bradley expressed his gratitude at being honored.
