Contract for New City Library Awarded

A $6.17-million contract to build a new city library was awarded by the City Council on Monday.
“This is the culmination of nine long years of hard work and frustration for the people of Mission Viejo,” said Mayor Sherri M. Butterfield, former chairwoman of the Mission Viejo Library Foundation. “It marks the end of all the dreaming and planning. Now we will watch the dreams become a physical reality.”
The construction contract was awarded to Douglas E. Barnhardt Inc. of San Diego, the low bidder among six competing firms.
The council also voted to add a courtyard for cultural events and a copper roof--included in the winning bid--to the 26,700-square-foot library building.
About $6.5 million has been budgeted for the library. The difference between the budgeted amount and the winning bid will be used for books and library furniture, city officials said.
