German Court Sentences U.S. Neo-Nazi
HAMBURG, Germany — American neo-Nazi Gary Lauck, the German fascists’ main supplier of hate literature, armbands, flags and other paraphernalia for two decades, was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison Thursday.
Lauck’s lawyer argued that the trial was illegal because Germany has no right to tell a U.S. citizen what to do in the United States.
Lauck prints his material in the United States and mails it overseas. Pro-Hitler, anti-Jewish material denying that the Holocaust occurred is protected by the U.S. Constitution but illegal in Germany under laws Americans helped formulate at the end of World War II.
Lauck was arrested on an international warrant from Germany while attending a neo-Nazi convention in Denmark in March 1995. He was extradited to Germany in September under a little-used Danish law against racist statements.
