Task Force on Abandoned Structures Urged
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors called Tuesday for the formation of a multi-agency task force to review ordinances and policies regarding abandoned structures like the one where an alleged gang rape, fire and killing occurred recently.
The supervisors asked that the task force include representatives of the Sheriff’s Department, county counsel and district attorney’s office, and that it make recommendations to the board in four months.
Board Chairman Mike Antonovich introduced the motion in the wake of last month’s shooting death of Viola McClain, an elderly Watts woman who was slain on her front porch.
McClain was shot by a 12-year-old boy after he and other youths raped a teenage girl in an abandoned home next to McClain’s residence, authorities said.
McClain’s neighbors have criticized Los Angeles officials for being too slow to respond to complaints that the vacant structure has become a magnet for transients.
