Trial Set for 5 Boys Accused of Kidnapping, Gang Rape

A Sept. 3 trial date was set Monday for five youths accused of kidnapping and gang raping a 13-year-old girl in an abandoned house in Watts, events that authorities say led to the fatal shooting of an 82-year-old woman, the Los Angeles district attorney’s office said.
Authorities say they believe that one of the juveniles--a 12-year-old boy--fired the shot that killed Viola McClain, but the boy has not been charged. Charges against a 14-year-old boy have been dropped, officials said.
The youths, who range in age from 12 to 17, remain in custody, authorities said.
