Woman, Son Drown in Detroit River

A 35-year-old woman who was said to be depressed about her family’s financial troubles took her two young sons by the hands and walked with them into the Detroit River, drowning herself and one of the boys. Bozena Piatyszek of Hamtramck, Mich., reportedly was distraught over some kind of failed business deal when she strode into the water near Belle Isle, an island park in the river. One of the boys broke away from his mother and ran to a police station. Police pulled the other boy from the water, but he died on the shore. Piatyszek died at a hospital.
