So much is said about the gold medalist in the decathlon being the world’s greatest athlete. Well, how about Thomas Kiely of Ireland, holding that title on a kind of permanent honorary basis? According to David Wallechinsky’s “Complete Book of the Summer Olympics,†Kiely won the first Olympic decathlon at the St. Louis Games in 1904, when they held all 10 events in one day.

The next Olympic decathlon that was held was in 1912 in Stockholm, and Jim Thorpe won it, but over three days.
