UCI’s Baker Won’t Pursue Job at Maine

UC Irvine basketball Coach Rod Baker, who interviewed this week for the vacant head coaching job at the University of Maine, withdrew his name from consideration for the job Thursday.

Baker was considered one of three finalists to replace Rudy Keeling, who resigned to become Northeastern coach. But after visiting the campus and interviewing there, Baker said he had changed his mind about the job.

“I withdrew because I felt there were things that needed to be done here,” said Baker, in the final year of a two-year contract extension at Irvine. “You get a certain feel, and here the feel is still good. [In Maine] it wasn’t right.”

When asked if he was pursuing other jobs, said, “You never say never. But I enjoy this town.”

Baker was named Big West coach of the year last season, but did not receive another contract extension by Athletic Director Dan Guerrero after the Anteaters finished 15-12.

Baker’s program has been plagued by player defections. Shortly after the 1995-96 season, starters Brian Keefe and Kevin Simmons, both second-team all-conference selections, transferred. Freshman Clay McKnight also decided to leave.
