NO LOVE LOST

Wednesday’s men’s tennis doubles match featured a set that went 34 games, the longest in men’s doubles Olympic history.

The Australian team of Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde defeated the Dutch team of Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis, 6-2, 5-7, 18-16.

The previous set record of 32 games went back to 1908 when the British team of Reginald Doherty and George Hillyard defeated another British team, Clement Cazalet and Charles Dixon, 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 17-15, 6-4, on the grass at Wimbledon.

The longest set in Olympic history included 38 games. It was played in Seoul in 1988, the Canadian team of Carling Bassett-Seguso and Jill Hetherington beating Argentines Mercedes Paz and Gabriela Sabatini, 7-6, 5-7, 20-18.
