The San Diego Padres, looking for a power hitter down the stretch, acquired Greg Vaughn from the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday for pitchers Bryce Florie and Ron Villone and outfielder Marc Newfield.

Vaughn, 31, is having the best season of his career, hitting .280 with 31 homers and 95 RBIs. He is eligible to become a free agent following the season and the Brewers were thought to have little chance of re-signing him.

Vaughn, who homered twice against Seattle on Tuesday night, was signed by the Brewers in 1986 and had spent his entire career with the organization.

Florie, 26, was 2-2 with a 4.01 ERA in 39 relief appearances this season and is 4-4 with a 3.25 ERA in 95 career appearances, all in relief.

Villone, 26, was 1-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 21 relief appearances. A first-round draft pick by Seattle in 1992, Villone won a bronze medal as a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.

Newfield, 23, was batting .251 with five homers and 26 RBI in 84 games.
