The U.S. boxers continued their surprising Olympic success, as six Americans reached the semifinals, including Floyd Mayweather, who defeated Lorenzo Aragon of Cuba. In track, Michael Johnson moved within two races of his historic Olympic golden 400-200 double, while Gail Devers’ bid for her own double triumph ended in disappointment. Devers, the 100-meter winner, finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. No woman has won both races in 48 years. Pole vaulter Sergei Bubka of Ukraine, who has set 35 world records in the event, pulled out because of an injured Achilles’ tendon.
