A Southwest Airlines flight bound for Salt Lake City returned safely Tuesday night to Los Angeles International Airport after receiving a bomb threat, police said.

A caller phoned the Southwest reservation counter in Little Rock, Ark., at 8:10 p.m. PDT, about half an hour after takeoff from Los Angeles, stating that a bomb placed aboard the flight would explode in 30 minutes, Officer Mike Partain said.

Police did not release details about the flight but said the 737 jet landed safely about 8:30 p.m. and that its passengers were evacuated. The LAPD’s bomb squad was searching the plane late Tuesday.

The incident followed a similar bomb scare the previous day involving a Carnival Cruise ship. No bomb was found and the cruise continued after a 3 1/2-hour delay.
