Re “Initiative Targets Renting, Selling to Illegal Immigrants,” July 22: The California Lawful Employment and Residency (CLEAR) initiative, which prohibits landlords from renting to illegal aliens and property owners from selling to them, is not only unnecessary but adds more government to our lives.
Most landlords, who are good businessmen, require a Social Security number from prospective tenants in order to check credit. If the applicant is an illegal alien, they either have phony identification or none at all, which in either case will not give them an acceptable credit report.
