Woes Continue for China’s Wang
China’s Wang Yifu, who collapsed after a blunder cost him an Olympic gold on Saturday, was out of medals and on oxygen again when he returned to the shooting range in the 50-meter free pistol event.
But Roberto Di Donna, the Italian who took advantage of Wang’s astonishing error to win the air pistol event, himself wilted under pressure Tuesday and allowed Boris Kokorev to claim Russia’s third shooting gold of the Games.
Wang’s collapse on Saturday, when he needed an oxygen mask and medical assistance, provided one of the most dramatic images of the Olympics.
He finished sixth Tuesday. Chinese officials said he was still suffering from dizziness and headaches that had also affected him before the Games. He again used an oxygen mask at the conclusion of the event.
Di Donna had an excellent chance of a second gold when he led with three final round shots to go but then managed only 7.2 with his eighth effort in an event where the average score is over nine.
Kokorev took advantage, finishing with 666.4 points, a new Olympic final record, while Belarus’s Igor Basinski, took second place with 662. Di Donna won the bronze with 661.9.
