Mike Batesole, Cal State Northridge’s interim baseball coach last season, is a finalist for the permanent job, Athletic Director Paul Bubb said Tuesday.
Batesole is one of three candidates to be interviewed, though there may be others. Bubb would not release the names of the other finalists. A decision is expected by Friday.
Tennis
Gene Malin of Woodland Hills defeated Wesley Jackson of Albuquerque, N.M., 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to win the United States Tennis Assn. Men’s National Hardcourt championship in the 45-and-over division Sunday at the Westlake Tennis & Swim Club.
Malin, 47, won the title for the third time in four years.
Track and Field
Greg Switzer, veteran cross-country coach at Hoover High, will take over the boys’ and girls’ track programs next year.
Switzer was track coach at Hoover from 1986-90 and a co-coach in ’91. He worked only with distance runners the last five seasons.
He will replace John Laue and Marina Thompson, coaches the past two seasons.
Softball
Shortstop Ashlie Hayes, from Chaminade High, has transferred to Cal State Northridge from Massachusetts.
Hayes, a three-time All-Mission League selection, batted .299 and drove in 25 runs last season.
