Hiking Swiss Trails
Having spent many summers walking in Switzerland, I was delighted to see the articles on the Engadine (“Destination: Switzerland,” June 30). Though well-known destinations were mentioned in the articles, there are innumerable trails, less frequented, that range from easy to challenging. One favorite, reached by postal bus from St. Moritz, climbs from Maloja Pass up to a tiny settlement overlooking three lakes, and winds through the wildflowers and by cascading streams back to lakeside villages in the valley. It should also be mentioned that the Engadine is home to the Swiss National Park.
My favorite place to stay is the Quadratscha in Samedan, a village at one corner of the triangle with St. Moritz and Pontresina, but much smaller than the other two. The breakfast buffet and dinners are scrumptious. I delight in the view of the mountains from my balcony and also enjoy a dip in the pool after a day of walking.
