NATIONWIDE : Adult Smoking Up in 1994, CDC Says

Smoking among American adults rose in 1994 to 25.5% from 25% despite the government’s best efforts, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta reported. As a result, the government acknowledged it won’t be able to meet its goal of reducing smoking to 15% of adults by 2000. Federal health authorities blame falling cigarette prices and nicotine’s powerful hold. The CDC said about 70% of smokers in 1993 and 1994 wanted to quit but could not.
