NORWAY : Consul Tortured in Myanmar, Oslo Says

Norway said it has evidence that its honorary consul in Myanmar was tortured before he died in a Yangon prison June 23. Leo Nichols, a 65-year-old diabetic with a heart condition, was subjected to sleep deprivation in prison and not given adequate medical care, said Deputy Foreign Minister Jan Egeland, who referred to sleep deprivation as “a commonly known torture technique.” Nichols was convicted in May of operating home telephones and fax machines without permission.
