Former Venice and University High assistant Armando Gomez was named varsity baseball coach at San Fernando.
Gomez replaces Dan Heim, who resigned last month after three seasons.
Gomez, 28, was City Section 3-A co-player of the year in 1986 after leading Venice to three consecutive 3-A titles. He played one year at San Diego State before transferring to Cal State Dominguez Hills.
“I was looking for a chance to start my own program,” Gomez said. “When this job opened up, I figured this would be a good opportunity.”
Golf
Russell Surber of Flintridge moved into a tie for fourth place with a one-under-par 71 in the second round of an American Junior Golf Assn. tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Surber has a two-day total of 142, two shots behind co-leaders Jason Allred of Ashland, Ore., and Michael Morrison of Signal Mountain, Tenn.
Surber has been selected to play in the Canon Cup in August.
Football
Josh Stein, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound offensive lineman who graduated from Ramona High last month, has committed to Cal State Northridge.
Stein was an all-Avocado League second-team selection.
