From Times Staff and wire reports

Airborne volcanic ash can be devastating to airplane engines and in recent years commercial aviation firms have learned to give erupting mountains a wide berth.

So authorities did not hesitate to close the Auckland, New Zealand, airport for two nights when ash clouds erupted from the Mt. Ruapehu volcano, a 9,000-foot peak on the country’s North Island.

There have been several sizable eruptions at Ruapehu since last September. There has been no loss of life, however.
