DMV Ends Public Fingerprint Service

Fingerprinting services for the general public and government agencies will no longer be provided by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
The DMV will continue to take thumbprints for driver’s licenses and for the California identification cards that it issues to nondrivers, said spokesman William Madison. However, starting today, the general fingerprinting services that it provided at $10 a card will be discontinued.
“It was having a time impact on services in our field offices,” Madison said. “And the bottom line of that translates into a cost impact.”
Madison said fingerprinting services are available through some notary public and other firms as well as various law enforcement agencies.
