68 Moves Surber to 7th Place
Russell Surber of Flintridge vaulted into seventh place of the American Junior Golf Assn.’s Lake Tahoe Classic with a three-under par 68 Wednesday at Genoa Lakes Golf Club in Genoa, Nev. Surber was 14th after a first-round 75 Monday.
Peter Joe of La Canada also fired a second-round 68 to jump from 41st place to 13th with a two-round total of 147.
Mike O’Keefe, a golf professional at El Cariso Golf Course in Sylmar, finished third in the Southern California PGA Players’ Championship this week at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano.
O’Keefe finished at 145, four strokes behind winner Brad Stormon of Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.
Ron Hinds and Roger Gunn, both pros at Westlake Village Golf Course, were part of a five-way tie for ninth at 147.
Football
Outside linebacker John McLaughlin, a former Hart High standout who played the last two seasons at Notre Dame, is transferring to California.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound McLaughlin must sit out next season under NCAA rules. He will have two years of eligibility beginning in 1997.
Baseball
Cal State Northridge’s Grant Hohman has signed with the Thunder Bay Whiskey Jacks, an independent team in the Northern League.
