Super Lightweight Rubio Headlines Tonight’s Card
IRVINE — Carlos Rubio, a 19-year-old super lightweight from Guadalajara, Mexico, finally will get a chance to fight tonight at the Irvine Marriott.
Rubio was supposed to fight in the main event of last month’s Marriott card, but his opponent, Carlos Guzman, twisted his ankle and pulled out at the last minute. Rubio has won his last three fights at the Marriott, including a victory over former North American Boxing Federation champion Rudy Zavala in January.
Manny Castillo, Rubio’s opponent, was on a list of fighters in line to face former world lightweight champion Rafael Ruelas in a nationally televised Top Rank show July 10, but he was passed over for La Mirada lightweight Michael Walsh, a Marriott favorite. Rubio (13-3-2 with four knockouts) and Castillo (13-4-2 with five knockouts) are scheduled for 10 rounds.
The undercard features Westminster featherweight Marcos Licona (6-0 with three knockouts), who will take on Jose Jimenez (0-2) of Roland Heights in a five-round bout. The undercard begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $25, $30 and $35 and can be purchased at the Marriott.
