Phillies Cut Loose Whiten, Leiper
The Philadelphia Phillies requested waivers on outfielder Mark Whiten and relief pitcher Dave Leiper for the purpose of giving both players their unconditional release. They also placed infielder Kevin Jordan on the 15-day disabled list.
Whiten, 29, hit .236 in 60 games with seven home runs and 21 RBI. Leiper, a 34-year-old left-hander, was 2-0 with a 6.43 ERA in 26 appearances.
Jordan injured his left knee while chasing a pop fly in Sunday’s 11-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

The Houston Astros activated reserve catcher Tony Eusebio, who had been on the disabled list since May 7 after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst from his left wrist. Outfielder James Mouton was optioned to Tucson. Mouton, 27, has a .218 batting average with one home run and 15 RBI in 50 games. . . . The Baltimore Orioles recalled outfielder Mark Smith from Triple-A Rochester and sent down outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds.
