Wachs Unveils Anti-Tax Hotline

Outraged by the Los Angeles Community College District’s plan to raise $200 million for facilities improvements over 20 years through an annual $12-per-household property assessment, City Councilman Joel Wachs on Monday unveiled a hotline for taxpayers to complain and announced plans to storm the district trustees’ meeting Wednesday.

“The real issue is not so much what they’re spending it on. The real issue is they’re going behind the backs of the voters. They’re really spitting on the face of democracy,” Wachs said.

“This is what people just hate about government. They don’t think they have any say in what’s going on. And in this case, they’re right.”

Wachs urged residents to call (213) 485-3322 to voice their views on the proposed tax, and promised to bring the recorded messages to Wednesday’s trustees’ meeting. He also will lead a 6 p.m. rally before the meeting at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, 400 W. Washington Blvd. in downtown Los Angeles. The meeting starts at 7.
