For consumers who are feeling increasingly nervous about the food they eat, the “1996 National Organic Directory†is just out from the Community Alliance with Family Farmers. “The organic industry is growing so fast, it’s almost a revolution,†says program director Carol Klesow.

The directory lists organic farmers, wholesalers and businesses by region, and includes a marketing guide and index of more than 1,000 organic commodities. In its 14 years, Klesow says, the guide has grown from a pamphlet to a 400-page directory “that’s fun to read.†Although most people think of organic (grown without pesticides) food only as fresh fruits and vegetables, the label also includes pastas, sauces, baby food, juices and milk.

The directory, priced at $35 plus shipping, can be ordered by calling (800) 852-3832. The Davis, Calif.-based Community Alliance with Family Farmers is a nonprofit organization committed to farming that sustains both the traditional lifestyle of the family farm and the integrity of the environment.
